In Reese Park in Augsburg, west of Abraxas, there is a large playground with a variety of climbing frames, a slide tower and a large, deep earth pit with tree trunks and ropes that invite you to climb.
As part of my group of works “Westpark Augsburg” I painted a view of this playground. It is a very personal, realistic view of this place on a sunny spring day.
The pit in the foreground takes up most of the painting. The gray, gravel-covered, flat bottom of the pit and its soft, earthy, sloping sidewalls are contrasted in color, materiality, and spatial orientation. The shadows on the gravel floor are clearly outlined and linear, while the shadows on the earth of the side walls are playfully moving and blurred.
The middle ground of the picture leads the view on the one hand spatially upwards and on the other hand further into the depth of the space. Here, man-made modern play and climbing equipment meets naturally grown old trees.
In the background of the picture one sees the meanwhile shut down gas boiler of Augsburg/Oberhausen, new and old residential buildings at the edge of the park, as well as a large heap of earth, which probably originates from the not yet finished construction work in the park.
All this is also part of the reality.
Through the presence of the many different people who enjoy the place friendly with each other or peacefully next to each other, the painting gets a wonderful liveliness that invites you to rest.
When painting my realistic oil paintings, including this one, I often use photos that I have made myself of a special moment for me, as a memory support.
Decisive for me, however, is always my personal impression of reality, my personal feeling that moves me to paint a piece of reality, to understand it myself and to share with others.
So it comes that many of the people who are present in my painting and for me also simply have to be there, are not to be found on the souvenir photo.
